One of the most welcoming cities that Lucas and I have visited, Knoxville, Tennessee, is a vibrant, artsy, and adventurous place. Check out Visit Knoxville and TripAdvisor for a taste.
Full of attractions, food, and culture, Knoxville has plenty of activities to fill a week or two long vacation. But if you are planning a weekend trip to Knoxville, here are my suggestions to get the most out of your time.
Attractions & Activities
World’s Fair Park
Hang out and have fun at the World’s Fair Park. The 1982 World’s Fair was held here and the Amphitheater and Sunsphere still stand. Check out this video remembering the fair.
Close by is the Knoxville Museum of Art and the Knoxville Convention Center. Perhaps you’ll catch a festival or performance while exploring this are.
Ijams Nature Center
Spend all day exploring nature at the Ijams Nature Center. Hike, bike, or paddle your way into some exercise and serenity.
Park at the Visitors Center then explore along the River Trail, which gives you a great view of the river (go figure) and some fun boardwalks.
Next, park near the lake and make sure to walk the Ross Marble Quarry Loop. Check out the trail guide for more information.
University of Tennessee
The first public college founded west of the Eastern Divide, the University of Tennessee is known for its excellence in education. It is also known for its historic buildings, strong traditions, and athletics.
Take a drive around campus and/or stop to learn additional information. Don’t forget to stop by the UT Gardens.
Downtown
If you are fan of walking, then downtown Knoxville is for you. Spend an evening exploring the area’s entertainment, dining, and shopping.
Make sure to check out Market Square and the Charles Krutch Park. Head south to the Gay Street Bridge to get a wonderful view of downtown and the Tennessee River.
Extras
There is no shortage of restaurants in Knoxville, including a vibrant food truck scene. And while you are exploring downtown, make sure to get some Cruz Farm Ice Cream.
If you are a big fan of escape rooms, Knoxville has plenty of options, including Breakout and Escape Game Knoxville.
Also, if you have time for move activities, travel in the trees at Navitat aerial adventure park or explore part of The Great Smokey Mountains.
Finally, if you enjoy Tennessee (of course you will) then check out The Perfect Long Weekend in Nashville. And if you love the area, get ideas from our Long Weekend in Asheville, NC.
