We’ve had our new porch for a year but hadn’t gotten around to paint the original trim and guttering to match the new color – Black!
I love the look of black guttering; it’s very modern. Since our house is a single-level brick built in the 50s, I’ve tried to mix mid-century and modern for the style. See my mid-century modern paint colors here.
I looked at a few resources before starting the painting project.
- AHC Gutter’s How to Paint Gutters
- Weatherguard Gutter’s Aluminum Rain Gutters
- Ask the Builder’s How to Paint Aluminum Gutters
The top tips were to make sure everything is clean, clean, clean, use an appropriate primer, and make sure to paint in the right temperature (and not in direct sunlight).
Before Pictures
My Process
1. Put on some good tunes
2. Scrape using a painter’s knife
3. Scrub with a wire brush
4. Sand with 120 grit
5. Wash guttering using soap then vinegar
6. Prime using an aluminum safe primer (non ammonia)
7. Paint two coats of exterior paint
After
I still have some touchups to do on the brick from the previous painter but I’m so excited to have one-half of the front of our house complete!
So have you wanted to repaint your guttering and/or trim?
